you get what you pay for August 10, 2008 bobpet (Seattle, WA USA) you get what you pay for - sound is almost too tinny and garbled to hear anything in or out
Works well, doesn't sound so good August 1, 2008 Douglas Dodds (Cambridge, MA, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The AT&T 1739 is called, in its text and reviews, the machine to go for, if you want an answering machine that is separate from any phone receiver. That was my goal, and I went for this unit. The controls and operation of the 1739 are a dream. It works very well, and does just what you'd want, quite intuitively. However. The audio quality of the recorded voices is, at best, mediocre. I think the problem here is that the compression of the recorded sound loses too much data. The result is a mushy sound that subverts intelligibility. This is evident right away in the greeting message you record. The recording of messages from good-quality wired phones are good enough to be usable. But messages from cell phones, which are themselves fidelity-challenged, often come out a hard-to-understand mush. Unfortunately, I can't rate this machine any higher than 3 stars.
AT&T Has a Winner! July 30, 2008 Gregory W. Comeau (New York, NY United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My Mom needed a new answering machine and I bought her a GE model. She found it confusing to use (it's not very user friendly), so I saw the AT&T 1739 on Amazon and purchased it. It's so compact and user friendly. In fact, I'm going to purchase one for myself just to have in case my 15 year old AT&T Model 1725 ever dies. Better strike when the iron is hot!
Outstanding value July 25, 2008 JLG 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
An easy 4-star rating for value and features. It may not be the clearest in the world, but it seems ok to me. It's easy to set up and use. Takes up less counter space than my old one. Most of the routine stuff has already been mentioned, so I'll address these bonus features for those with Caller-ID: ~ talking (verbal announce) of CID numbers. I paid at least this much (and considerably more) for standalone talking CID boxes (the ones with programmable categories will cost more). The ability to announce unknown/unavailable (ie typically telemarketer) numbers is very worthwhile which this unit does; my other boxes silently ignore these, which is a bug IMO. ~ the option to have it silently drop "anonymous" calls. Not a must-have, but nice nonetheless. Several reviews mention various issues I haven't experienced. For example, my unit definitely beeps at the beginning of a recording. For less than than $20, it's not going to get better than this! If it had a white detachable power cord I would have given it 5-stars.
