4 out of 5 stars Good mic, but confusing set up...   August 4, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

This is a decent and good looking mic, of which I purchased to 'step up' my podcasting, since I do a talk radio show and have been for the last few years. I figured it was time to upgrade from my headset mic to a more professional studio mic.

I did some research and this one kept coming up. It has nice weight to it and to be trivial, it also looks great in front of you and feels like you are in a studio. I also bought a desktop stand (boom) and pop filter, so it looks even more professional.

HOWEVER. The set up is a pain unless you do a few searches for information. The recording software that I use (Audacity) would only read one channel until I learned it was a mono mic. This is no big deal if you are recording voice for a talk show, as it sounds the same. Stereo is only good if you are going to use stereo effects (i.e. sound coming from one channel to the next etc, which some music does). Also, had to play around until I realized I had to go to my control panel and adjust the volume on the mic in the 'Advanced' tab under 'sounds'.

The recording software that it comes with is a cluster-mess, another search online finally showed me a myriad of MIDI adjustments I had to do. I abandoned the software, it was too confusing and technical for someone who just wants to hit 'record' and talk, then save and upload. I finally figured out how to get it to work with Audacity, as well as get the file format to properly match the server I use for the podcast and direct streaming.

The sound is good, picks up the bass in my voice well and I don't have to sit right in front of it, even sitting back and it picks me up clearly. Have to admit I only noticed a slight difference in the sound over my $30 headset mic, but it is a big enough difference as the sound doesn't 'spike' from time to time and is much more smooth and even in it's tone. Other than the mess of software, drivers and adjustments I had to play with, I think I finally have it set up correctly and would have liked to not have had to take hours to figure all of this out. I consider myself a technophile, so I can imagine how confusing it could be to someone who just wants to plug it in and 'play'...and how frustrated they might have gotten wondering why no sound was being recorded. Even the software that came with it does not seem to be set up or meant for this mic, but a free 'toss in' that you have to still configure and go through trial and error until it's right.

I do like the mic, do not get me wrong, but I would be lying if it didn't cross my mind to just take it back and stick to the headset mic that has worked for me for years...just to avoid the initial headache. Now that I have it working propoerly, I am happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding microphone   July 16, 2008
I love this microphone, as it is very good quality, but more importantly sets up very easily. I use it with Audacity, a very simple recording program - which is free. Keep it in mind.

I've been using this for about a year and still have no regrets. It is perfect for VO stuff or podcasting.

If you have a Mac you may experience problems because of the software, according to the other reviews. But as someone sick and tired of hearing Mac users drone on about their computers in that tech-porn way they do it, that's a good thing.

5 out of 5 stars simply great!   June 28, 2008
I just plugged this mic into my iMac(OSX 10.5.3), opened Garage Band, and it works perfectly! Great sound quality, rugged construction and couldn't be simpler to use. You couldn't ask for more at this price!

5 out of 5 stars Solid Mic at a Great Price   May 27, 2008

The mic is fantastic. The value is hard to beat, and quality is unmatched at this price. When you get the mic you are aware that this is studio quality, and the experience you get with is will set you apart from your home recording brothers.

1 out of 5 stars Very Limited Usefulness   April 30, 2008

The microphone works through your USB port, but because of that, you can't listen to what you're doing while you're doing it. In other words, you can't set levels at all, or listen to other recordings and put this input in with them; in other words, using it to make multi-track recordings on your computer is out.
