Close to perfection! December 15, 2008 I. Segovia (New Jersey) I've been a Shure user for over 7 years, and this is the best set of IEM I've ever owned. I bought them to replace my trusty but wore down E4's and I couldn't be happier. At first the SE530 don't represent a huge step forward from E4's (mostly due to sonic accommodation) but soon after they're properly broken in and adjusted with the right sleeves (this is crucial to get the most out of them) they blew out the E4s. I even found them less lazy in the low bass dept. than the UE-10 which I also own (but no longer use). These IEM have the cleanest, crispest and most balanced mids I've heard, the bass is really quick and deep (even though they won't blow your head up with low freqs), lastly the highs are slightly out of control without a little of EQ magic, but that's a minor issue (assuming you know how to EQ your audio source). If you can afford them, there's no IEM with warmer sound, and well defined frequency ranges in its price category. I honestly think they could even put up a decent fight against a pair of UE-11 and they're 600$ less expensive. Let me put it this way, think of the SE530s as if you were buying an Aston Martin for the price of a mid class BMW...
Are they worth $500.00? December 14, 2008 Jason S. Gago (London, UK) I have owned isolation earphones for the past three years and cannot go back to anything else. I purchase the SE530 about a month ago( Oct. 2008) after five long months of justifying a $500 dollar purchase for EARPHONES. After purchasing the SE530 I only wish I purchased them sooner. I have previously owned the the Shure E4Cs and was pleased with them for the most part until I heard a set of E5Cs. Ever since then I never looked at them the same, I felt cheated. I finally found happiness with the SE530s and advise that these are not for all people. At a price point of $500 they are subject to diminishing return where you pay more for marginal quality improvement. Are they worth $500? You bet! If you're not an audiophile then you will be happy with a set of $50 earphones. If you are a true coinsure of audio fidelity then these guys may do the trick for you. But why not spend the $1100 for the new Ultimate Ears Pro 11 with four transducers. In short I have found the following. Pros. -Superb audio quality. -Decent noise isolation. -Comfort with the right inserts. -Adjustable cable lengths make management easy. Cons. -Should have memory cable to stay in place. -Guilt about poor treatment. If you read a poor review about bass response that is because someone forgot to insert them properly. If bass feels lacking then simply give a nudge into the ear canal or try the proper inserts. Are they worth it? It depends on how much you like your music. I simply can't go back.
The Best October 27, 2008 Jimi (Birmingham, AL USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought these to replace my old E2c's, which served me well. They were a great introduction to this fantastic line of headphones that will leave you amazed no matter which model you go with. If you've never heard any of shure's earphones before, you owe it to yourself to see what everyone is talking about. Shure truly backs up its products. Every pair comes with a 2 year warranty that is top notch. On two separate occasions I sent my headphones in for a repair and ended up recieving a brand new pair with no hassel whatsoever. On both occasions the headphones were malfunctioning due solely to my own negligence in caring for them. I would wrap them tightly around my ipod or just toss them in a pocket or bookbag. The first issue I had involved the separation of the two halves of the casing surrounding the left earphone's speaker. On the second repair, the sound started to go in and out on the right earphone. After recieving my third pair, I promised myself to be more careful and they stood the test of time. It was a valuable lesson that I learned for free thanks to shure's awesome warranty. Well, I accidentally slammed the car door on my last pair and completely severed the cord when I unknowingly drove around with it hanging outside as I drove. So, it was time to get a new pair. Here are some considerations I made before going with these bad boys: -I knew I was going with shure. I had such a great customer experience with my E2c's and I truly loved the sound they produced. -I knew I wanted to upgrade to a higher end product, both because my budget allowed for it and out of pure curiosity: How much better can sound get than the E2c's? The answer depends entirely on how discerning of a listener you are. For your average mp3 owner, I can't imagine them being able to justify the difference in price and sound quality among the shure product line. Therefore, I'd recommend starting at the bottom for such users. -I know I wanted to go at least with a dual driver set up, mainly for maximum separation and bass reproduction. That means it was either between the se420 or the se530. Well, I haven't tried the 420's, but the price difference was just insignicant enough to go with the flagship (and much sexier) se530. I'm glad I did. I can't imagine anything coming close to this. I am noticing details in my favorite, most listened-to music that I never have before. I don't need to rehash what numerous reviewers have already harped over. The sound these put out is absolutely heavenly. If you're truly worried about whether you'll be able to tell the difference at all between these two models, take into account what type of music you listen too. Classical and jazz fans will definitely be the ones who will appreciate the sound quality difference the most as these genres require such meticulous reproduction of sound to true students and afficionados. A note to those who decide to buy any of shure's earphones: all of these products require a certain amount of break-in time. I have read reviews that bash them based on their fresh-out-of-the-box assesment of sound quality. First of all, most don't immediately know how to obtain a good seal/fit and will not get the most out of these until they do so. Secondly, these earphones only sound better and better with time. Wait at least a few days before making any rash decisions. I couldn't be more happy after my first few days with these earphones. I will post an update here and there as the months pass for those interested in how well they hold up over time, mainly to either confirm or refute the claim that the wiring is prone to cracking and becoming exposed. I am actually quite suprised that so many people have mentioned anything about the inflexibility of the wiring. From what I have experienced thus far, the wires used on these earphones are nearly identical to my friend's pair of E4c's and they haven't given him any problems, nor have I heard of any issues in reviews. Perhaps they noticed that many earphones were being sent in due to exposed wiring and changed the materials. I would give these higher than five stars if I could.
Wow. I have never heard music sound so amazing in my 49 years! October 23, 2008 K. Carmony (So. Cal, United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
There have been those few times in my life when I have been really blown away by something new in A/V. For example, the first time I heard Bose 901 reflecting speakers, the first time I tried Sennheiser open-air headphones, or the first time I watched a football game in high definition TV. These were moments where I heard or saw a significant jump in performance from what had come before. Listening to the Shure SE530 Sound Isolating Earphones is now another one of these moments. I won't go into durability, comfort, value, etc. (all covered by other reviews and all perfectly adequate for me), all I will discuss is the SOUND. The clarity and lack of distortion is amazing. No matter how low or loud you listen, all you hear is pure, clear, amazing sound. Each instrument is vivid and alive. Every nuance the sound engineers strive to embed in their work when recording a record can finally be heard. It's as if the sound bypasses your ears and starts living right in your head. Without any outside interference, you can close your eyes and live INSIDE the music. You have to really experience it to understand. It's like trying to describe high definition TV, you really just have to see it to understand. If you love music, as I do, this is a worthwhile investment. These earphones will take your entire music collection, even MP3 files on your iPod or iPhone, to a whole new level. I may not need to buy a new CD for months, as just listening to my existing music collection is new and wonderful with these earphones. Even older, less technically superior recordings sound amazing. Five stars, no question. Kevin Carmony
Brilliant! October 22, 2008 JF (Miami, FL United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having owned a pair of Etymotic ER 6i series for a couple of years, I recently decided to upgrade to a pair of Shure E530. The fragile nature of the Etymotic cables kept me away from the ER-4P. After listening to the E530's for the past several hours, I am blown away. While the ER 6i's were a quantum leap above the standard Ipod headphones, the E530 are likewise another huge leap over the ER6's. Granted, the cost factor has gone up by the same percentage. That said, as with the cost of any item, perceived value is the issue. In this case, based on my level of satisfaction, I believe that I have received good value for this purchase. Been listening to a wide range of music from jazz, electronica, and classical. The smile has only gotten wider. For those people who complained about the level of base, my only suggestion is that you likely didn't insert them properly. Relative to the Er6's - much better base -- again, based on the price, I'd expect no less. I think that I'll be reluctant to go back to listening to my Paradigm Reference series loudspeakers. **** 11/28/08 Update **** After owning the Shures for about a month, I have to revist my rating. While I am awestruck by the sound, I have been nonetheless extremely disappointed with the customer service from Shure. In trying to try different earbud tips, I found that the tips on the stock headphones were stuck -- seemingly glued on. I even tried with a set of pliers... to no avail. When I contacted the seller, they acknowledged that this had been a FREQUENT complaint -- and that Shure WOULD NOT step up for this type of problem. However, I could "chance it and break the headphones, and then Shure might live up to their warranty". Needless to say I was shocked. I have tried to contact Shure on three different occasions -- I only received the canned "we will get back to you in 24 hrs" -- with no response. Also called the company, they took my message, and no one has returned my call in over 2 weeks. I love the sound from them. However, I simply cannot recommend any product where the company is unresponsive, or worse, to its customer base. Especially when a reseller admits that it has been a FREQUENT and KNOWN problem on behalf of Shure.
