3 out of 5 stars Sound Decent, Do not stay on very well   November 6, 2008

I bought these because I needed head phones for the gym. I was not overly worried about sound quality, but I did want them to sound pretty good. Let's say I was looking for a minimum 6 out of 10 for sound quality. These sound ok I would give them a 5. Sound quality being one issue I was looking for a balance of sound and ear phone stability. Is that the correct term? I just want the things to stay on my head when I work out!

I am 6'1", 235 lbs. I would say my head size is a little above average. The headphones would not stay in place on me. They kept popping out or sliding up the outer edge of my ear, not both ears, only one ear. The firm cable control is not adjustable which is what makes these stay in place. So if you have an above average head size do not get these. I gave these to a friend (smaller head) and he loves them). I hope this helps you.

these headphones don't actually stay in your ear very well, especially when running. maybe my ears are shaped different, don't know.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Flexible earphone   November 2, 2008

The SONY MDR-AS50 provides good sound with morderate bass and is good for use while working out. The extension cable is almost always necessary unless you have an mp3 player such as an ipod shuffle that you can clip onto your arm.
Wearing this neck-band will require some skills for the first few attempts and eventually it becomes easy.

These are probably one of the best headphones I've ever purchased. They come with 3 sizes of ear buds for the perfect fit. I workout 6 days a week: cardio, weight lifting. Never had an issue with them falling out. I highly recommend them to anyone that has an active lifestyle.

I have had these now for about 10 months. I was looking for headphones to wear while running. That's it. Just running. There are a lot of headphones that would be more suitable for weight training, while on a bench, etc. and I use others for that purpose. Two things set these apart from many - probably most - other headphones for use while running: 1) the ability to handle lots of sweat (and not die) and 2) the ability to stay in place while running. MANY headphones will not handle the sweat and die. These handle both of these criteria very well.

The cord is a two-piece; I don't care about that but those that like to clip their ipod to their shirt sleeve will find that a nice feature. The cable management (left side) is good and as unobtrusive as can be expected. They are light and have good sound quality (...while running - these are not $300 Bose sets...) It comes with a nice case to prevent the cord from knotting up with all the other cords in my gym bag. I have seen reports that the buds are hard to fit but I did not find that the case. The buds are in the ear - I like that - not on the ear.

Overall, I would rate this a 5 (instead of the 4 I gave them) but the spine now seems broken (after 10 months, *sigh*) near the left ear piece which makes it difficult to get a snug fit in that ear. The spine is probably a piece of plastic inside the rubber coating but should be a lot tougher and not fail after only 10 months. I'll try another pair though to see if it occurs again because after trying MANY other sets over many years, these come the closest to being "just right". For running.
