Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A bit noisy, but for the price it fits my needs   August 8, 2008
Brian Hernandez (Walla Walla, WA, USA)
Originally I was looking for the Plantronics DSP 500, but since they were out of stock I took a chance at the Audio 650 USB edition. I have to say right off that there is a bit of static noise in the background at all times, which is a bummer. But my voice is louder than the noise most of the time so it's not too bad. I am primarily using it for podcasting, Sykpe and general recording for video screencasts. And, considering I bought my pair used at just $12.00 shipped, it was a great deal!

I think the noise is due to the fact that the mic is really analogue (green and black 1/8" mini jacks) device that plugs into a dual mini-phone to USB adapter..."making it digital"... whatever. A true digital mic would have USB on the cable without need for an adapter, such as the DSP 500 model. I've heard that mic and it's much cleaner and noise-free.

Overall, the Plantronics USB Audio 650 microphone headset is a pretty good "bang-for-the-buck" product. It suits my podcasting and Skype needs for now, until I can get the Plantronics DSP 500 headset mic. But I also plan to upgrade the sound quality more by purchasing the Studio Projects B1 microphone in combination with the PreSonus Firebox, firewire mic preamp. But that project is at least $400 down the road... I'll sacrifice with this $12 headset for now. ugh... do I have to?? LOL.

1 out of 5 stars don't buy from this seller   July 11, 2008

USB headset came with no USB connection. Seller indicated authorization is required prior to returning. After being contacted several times the seller e-mailed authorization, but dated it such that the unit had to be returned within two days of that notification. Not only would this require expedited, high cost shipment, it was to be at the buyer's cost. Furthermore the seller indicated there would be an 18% re-stocking fee.

Bottom line, the product (at least in this case) isn't what the title claims and the seller was non responsive, and ultimately unreasonable in the resolution of this case of false advertising.

2 out of 5 stars USB Connecctor failed within four months   June 21, 2008

Even for $30 I expected better. I'm not saying I was setting myself up to get theater-caliber sound and voice quality as if I was in the next room, although the headset did deliver a reasonable level of both considering the low price tag. What did bug me was that the USB connector failed within four months. Twice.

Yup, when the first one failed I bought a second one after speaking with Plantronics' customer service call center people and having them assure me that it wasn't a normal failure (of course, since I couldn't find my receipt, they couldn't do anything for me on a warranty repair) and I believed them. Unfortunately, the second headset had the same failure right about the three-month mark.

Nothing heralds the failure - it just elects to stop working suddenly and no amount of troubleshooting can get it back to functional. The headset works fine when the USB connector is taken out of the equation, but that does me no good on a Macbook Pro, which has no mic jack.

Part of the problem may be that the USB connector is quite long (nearly 3 inches) and due to its own weight and that of the cables it hangs off a horizontally-oriented USB port at quite an angle at times. It's possible that it torqued itself right into oblivion. If so, that's a design flaw. Otherwise the headset works fine still and is comfortable enough for long-term wear. I can still use it for Skype on my PC laptop which has a mic jack but it's been relegated for listening only on the Macbook Pro.

I'm hoping that the adage of "you get what you pay for" is true with headsets and will be shopping around once again for another model that costs a bit more.

You can bet I'll be keeping the receipt though.

4 out of 5 stars Price = worth it.   April 6, 2008

If you want something cheap with a bang, these headphones are for you. I bought them to step in for my 5.1 PC set after having split coke on the receiver. Still waiting for it to get fixed. These work great for the simple user.

They are relatively comfortable. I haven't gotten the USB hookup to work yet but that's probably user error. The base was my main concern with these headphones but I have to say they sound great. They don't rival any of the higher priced sets but you get what you payed for plus. I really enjoy the noise reduction alss. I always had a noisy fan near my PC which is completely blocked out by these things.

Definite buy if you're a gamer for the mic support solid sound with noise reduction.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect for my needs   February 29, 2008

I got this for work to use with over the net conference calls and it works great. The USB interface makes plugging in easy. I have only 2 minor complaints. 1. My ears get hot after wearing it for a long time. 2. I wish I could rotate the microphone 180 degrees so that I could wear it on the right side instead of the left.

This is my first experience with noise reduction headphones and these work so well that I have a hard time determining just how loud I sound to people around me when I talk. So far I wear the right ear cup slightly ajar so that I can hear myself better.
