3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.   June 28, 2008

I bought the JVC HANC250 headphones expressly to use on a long airplane trip. The price at a local giant electronics store was much higher than I paid through Amazon. Thank you Amazon! The headphones do make a small difference in noice reduction but not enough to warrant even the price on Amazon. The earbuds that came with my Ipod work just as well on noise reduction and better in sound quality without the annoying hessing noise, (see below).

The correct discription for this product would be an on-ear, not over-ear headphone with some noice reduction with the use of air hessing noises that combine with your music to give you the sense that you have noise reduction. The hissing noise is a distraction from the music for us older folks (62) who are beginning to have some difficutly hearing every little sound because we have been used to cranking up the volume for 50 years now. (I do not require hearing aids yet, just getting older).

Because they are not over-ear or in-ear devices there are gaps when the earphones are on your ear, these gaps allow any noise near by you to become amplified as it makes it though to your ears. If you have tiny earsa this may not be an issue for you. I actually found the music better for me without the noise reduction feature on.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome performance and comfortable as well   June 28, 2008
I bought this headphone after doing much research and I am completely satisfied with its performance so far. There is a hum while turning on noise cancellation without music, but I don't just turn it on without music anyways. While traveling on Boeing 737-300 and 737-700 on a short trip, I tested it's performance and it really brought down the engine noise to zero.

4 out of 5 stars First time user of NC headphones   June 27, 2008
First time trying NC headphones. Purchassed based upon user and critical reviews. The first thing I can say is that you don't really realize what you are hear until you don't hear. I was in a room with no people and a "whisper quiet" AC. The difference between NC and no NC was dramatic. Then a "loud and obnoxious co-worker" came in. The headphones passed the test at this point. I use them exclusively in NC mode now.

Used primarily with a PSP and volume and clarity.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY!   June 27, 2008
I just received my JVC HANC250 headphones and I have to say AMEN! I had previously ordered the Sony MDR-NC60 headphones and sent them back within 10 minutes due to a very annoying humming/vibration in the right ear cup. Booo!

The JVC headphones are super comfortable (I'm about to take a 14 hour flight next week and I'll update after that) and the sound is amazing. My partner has the Bose QC3 headphones and I have to say these sound just as good if not better and they are less than half the price; the QC3 sound a little "muddy" on the lows.

The other great feature is the AAA battery used to power them and the hard case that comes for storage (great for packing in luggage). No need to worry about having a plug on the airplane when your battery dies (just be sure to pack an extra AAA).

If you are in the market for noise cancelling headphones, do yourself a favor and give these a listen. I don't think you will be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Makes for a different plane ride   June 21, 2008
About 2 weeks earlier I flew back and forth to San Francisco with regular iPod Touch headphones. I had to have the volume maxed out to be able to hear the movies and TV shows I had downloaded. Then flew round trip to LAX. What a difference, the roar of the plane was gone as soon as I flipped the JVC's on. I never fell asleep, but I definitely arrived feeling much more refreshed and my iPod battery lasted longer as I didn't have to max out the volume. Comfort level was excellent. Just wish they were cheaper!
