Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This PC card offers a 400 Mbps data transfer rate for IEEE 1394 (FireWire) and 480 Mbps data transfer rate for USB 2.0. All downstream ports handle high-speed (480 Mbps), full speed (12 Mbps) and low speed (1.5 Mbps) transactions. There are one 6-pin and one 4-pin IEEE 1394 ports. This Combo CardBus provides both USB 2.0 ports and FireWire ports on a single CardBus. Combining these two high speed connectivity technologies on CardBus saves money and reduces Notebook weight.

5 out of 5 stars Works without problems   August 12, 2008

I installed this card on a machine running Windows XP Pro SP2 and it worked fine. I did not need to install any drivers and I would have been very surprised if I had to. Sarbent does provide a dozen or so drivers on the included CD for those with earlier versions of Windows.

A nice touch is the inclusion of a power cable that plugs into the card and a USB port for those situations where the device requires more power than a regular port provides.

Also included is a 6 pin to 4 pin Firewire cable.

Aside from that, you are on your own. There are no directions, nothing in the box. There's no hint of the manufacturer's name or URL in the package. If you're installing with Windows version earlier than XP Pro SP2, you had best know your way around the OS. Sarbent does have a website, but they don't really offer anything in the way of support.

As I said, this card worked for me out of the box and - so far - I'm pleased with it.

1 out of 5 stars Warning - external power required!   May 26, 2008

You will not read in the Amazon.com description, nor will you even read in the printed "instructions" shipped with this unit, that you may need to give the card additional power by plugging its special cable in to one of your existing USB ports. Neither Amazon nor Sabrent list 'available USB port' as a requirement on their websites. Because I bought this card to replace my BROKEN existing USB ports, it is worthless!

The printed "manual" is a joke - it's simply a listing of specs - and there is no electronic version of the manual on the Sabrent website. Further - the enclosed CD, which has a blank face with no indication of what it is - is an installer for video editing software. There is NO indication of how to install drivers from this CD, if they even exist on the CD. I downloaded drivers from Sabrent website, and they did not work. Again, no instructions.

This card doesn't even work with my mouse. I have to send this back now. What a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Value for your money, Works fine   May 5, 2008

1) Value for your money
2) Works fine without hassle. Adds to USB 2 + 2 Firewire ports to your old laptops with PCI card slots.
3) No additional power cable is required. Bus powered + additional power can be provided with your old USB1.1 port (included)

I've owned this for several years. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes devices attached are recognized, sometimes they're not. Also, not Linux compatible.

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't get it to work on either of my laptops   February 10, 2008
Zachery L. Olson (Lake Forest, CA)
I couldn't detect a USB memory drive on either of my laptops - a dell latitude 620 (New) and Thinkpad T20 (old). Sending it back as non-functional. Waste of time for me.
