Product Description This dual-purpose optical device works as both an optical switch and an optical splitter. As a switch, it will allow you to connect more than one input source to your home theater amplifier/receiver. Connect up to 2 audio sources and choose between them, rather than dealing with the hassle of constantly unplugging and reconnecting cables. Switch between digital audio components such as your satellite receiver, CD/DVD player, and video game console with ease. Just connect 2 of your audio sources to one end of this switch, and connect the other end to your amplifier/receiver. Then simply power on the source you would like to hear, and this device will auto sense it and begin outputting the audio to your amplifier/receiver. This device also works as an optical splitter. It will allow you to connect one digital audio input source, and split the signal to 2 home theater receiving devices. Now you can split the digital signal from your CD, DVD or other digital optical device and connect it to both your receiver and digital video recorder (DVR). This device is easy to use and does not require a power source, making it a must-have for any home theater enthusiast.

Works fine for game systems October 4, 2008 B. Ruppel Using as an auto-switch for the Xbox 360 and PS3. At first one of the connections was spotty and I had to hold the unit just right to get a solid connection. I thought I had been scammed and that the negative reviews were right. BUT then I did some troubleshooting and I found that only one of my input cables created a problem. I don't know for sure if this cable is bad or if the switch is more sensitive than most, but the cables were dirt cheap and I had a spare. After substituting the spare everything worked perfectly. Good deal!
The one from Parts Express is truly Bi-directional (works as a switch) September 24, 2008 Home Theater Learning-LM (Miramar, FL United States) Buy the one from Parts Express here on Amazon. I noticed that some of the other companies have a Disclaimer stating: "This is a Splitter, this is not a switch", but not Parts Express, so if you want to make sure it will work as a switch buy the one from Parts Express. When the package arrives it is clearly labeled with a sticker that says "Bi-directional" meaning you can use it as a splitter or as a switch. I also bought it and it works for me fine as a "switch". I have both our xbox 360 and our ps3 bluray optical cables going into the 2 inputs and then I have the 1 output otical cable going into our receiver and it works perfect. It switches back and forth (xbox360 and ps3) depending on the device that you are using, i.e., depending the device that is turned on. If they run into a conflict because you forgot to turn one off or the like...all you do is turn them both off and then turn the one you want to use on again and you're good to go.
Worked for a while then died September 15, 2008 John Malone (Davie, FL USA) This product worked for about 7 months then I started to get horrible static. I took it out and did a direct connection and the static stopped. The funny thing is that I hadn't used it for a few months. The last time I used it the thing worked great then the other day it decided to stop functioning.
Doesn't work. September 9, 2008 James Currie Doesn't work. Wanted to use this to split optical out into two, one to my receiver and one to my surround headphones with optical input to control box. The split dims the light down, such that neither out would be recognized. Having a background in professional audio, I did some troubleshooting, swapping cables and configurations. Nothing worked. I returned and got a replacement. Repeated everything and still doesn't work.
Don't but this September 7, 2008 Tech User (Marietta, Georgia USA) Only one input works. I have a receiver with one optical input and purchased this in order to use my Satellite receiver and my apple TV. In order to use this I have to unplug one or the other (yes I use one device at a time) piece of crap,
