5 out of 5 stars Why Pay More!?   July 3, 2006
Stephan L. Anderson (Reno, NV)
This DVD burning isn't as cut and dried as some would like you to believe. However, just because you get a bad burn doesn't mean it is the discs. There is a whole bunch of stuff going on in your computer that can affect the burn.

I have a Dell 1.2 ghz, with a Lite-On 8x drive, running Nero 6 OEM. Pretty generic, but these Memorex 8x and now 16x discs burn just fine. In fact, I have burnt about 600-800 of these discs and have had very few fall-outs. Not enough to justify buying the "better" quality discs.

Now for the caveat: I did have one spate of problems, caused by a not so well behaved antivirus program. I tossed out the antivirus program and went over to Avast!(it's free, check with Microsoft). Problem solved even though I run Winamp and a logging environmental sampling program while burning discs.

We burn hundreds of discs for a hospital lecture series. They are being played on all sorts of equipment, including some pretty banged up junk. So far I have not received one complaint about the discs only suggestions about the content.

Before you spend big bucks on some "better" disc, pop up your task manager in XP and see if there is some runaway task that needs some discipline. Also, if you must run "better" discs then do a surface test in Nero. I bet the "better" disc will look very close to failure if the Memorex failed.

1 out of 5 stars Will burn fine, but loose data after time   July 6, 2005

I bought 50 DVD spindle. Used them all with no problem. Once tried to see the movies they all started freezing 1/2 way. I called my friend and he had the same problem. It looks like I have to turn off the DVD player for about 15 minutes and wait for the DVD temperature to cool down. The normal heat generated from the DVD player is affecting the DVD disks. Once I do that, it works fine. Unfortunately I already bought another 100 spindle from Best Buy, but these were worse, I recorded with no problem but it froze all together once tried to watch the movie. I tried 5 disks with same result. I returned them with full refund. I used generic DVD from Staples and worked great. I transfered some DVD's and they worked fine. I'm using Philips now on NEC DVD burner and they worked great. After doing some research and reading some reviews on chat lines I found that a lot of people having the same problem. One person said that Memorex use the cheapest die for thier DVD's. Please be aware, they might burn fine but when you need to retrieve the data is were you'll have the problem.

1 out of 5 stars Poor   May 5, 2005

Ive been through 8 dvd's, 1 failed, 1 was not seen as blank media, the others wrote successfully but are unreadable on 1 pc dvd rom, another pc dvd rom and the writer itself. The media looks like it has been written to but coating is fainter then the last batch. Now I just finished a small spindle of non printable Memorex DVD+R and had no problems. And literally, nothing changed besides the media. Pass up this package. Too good to be true.

1 out of 5 stars GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   April 7, 2005

DON'T DO IT!!!!

THINK AGAIN!!!!

In truth I insult good garbage. These discs are worse.

Over the past year I used over 500 4x printables, and in thaqt time I had 1 Coaster. 7 out of 7 with these. Discs always gave disc dirty error in player. Defects in the media itself. Visible to the naked eye on 3 of them.

Returned the rest of the spindle for a refund.

If you need your media to work the first time, you cannot trust Memorex.

3 out of 5 stars This is CMC Mag R03 8X   February 25, 2005
Experienced burner (Los Angeles, CA)

All the previous reviews need to be updated. CMC Mag's 8X or speedier media have improved significantly since the 4X. As long as your burner is not one of those 1st or 2nd generation (AKA 2.4X or 4X) burners which do not have the writing strategy for the faster media like the 8X (requires firmware update); then you should have no problem with the new CMC media. Anyway, it is still not worth 70 cents a piece, maybe 50 cents.

In general, the quality of newer media starts from 8X is much better for all manufacturers, but I still don't want to touch Optidisc, Princo, and An32 media code discs.
