Sorry, BrightHouse, but I need more choices for less $$$$ March 14, 2010 Jeff (Sonova Beach, FL) I've been researching ways to increase my cable channel happiness and reduce the costs. My research started a while ago, but a Cosumerist post about subscriber fees really got my goat. Look at all the junk channels that we are forced to pay for. I could care less about any sports channel or 90% of everything else. It is my opinion that we should be able to choose extra channels separately after we hook up with basic cable. You'll also notice that BH charges extra for a special HD tier. Sure it's only $6 a month, but geez, look how much markup there is. Anyways, you get the idea. I don't have any issues with BH. They've served me well for a few years. But I need more of what I want. Not what BH thinks I want.
So, I dropped down to basic cable and purchased a Roku HD unit. Set-up was a snap. I used HDMI for the TV and stream with a N router.
OMFG! This thing is amazing! In short, it streams unlimited Netflix offerings to your TV. The cheapest Netflix subscription ($9) is all you need. Plus it streams Amazon Video On Demand, and a bunch of internet channels. You can stream wirelessly or hard wire with an ethernet cable.
Can you tell I'm excited? Anytime I can boost my entertainment for less dollars is always a good day. The Roku will pay for itself in 2 months after switching to basic. And its HD!
Sigh...I must go.
I've been watching the original Dr. Who from the 60's.
best 99.99 I ever spent March 13, 2010 D. White (houston) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is without a doubt the best 99.99 I ever spent. I hooked it up to my wireless network and it was so so easy. This product is very user friendly. So far I have not used the Amazon on Demand service, and since everything else is practically free as long as you pay 9.00 a month to Netflix, it's a no brainer. I have ATT Pro Internet, which is their midrange service, and movies download in about 10 seconds. I watch a lot of stuff in HD, and the picture is the best I have ever seen. I pay 60.00 a month to my cable company and don't even get HD channels. The cable companies better watch out---if this thing catches on and more providers sign up to deliver product, I could see the cable companies literally going out of business. If you have this neat little toy, all you really need to stay connected is high speed Internet and a cell phone---bye bye cable---and good riddance! If I could think of one minus, and it's a really small one, is that there is no way to drill down and get to the guts of this thing and play around with advanced settings. If your a true tech geek, you might find it a little bland. It's almost too simple.
Great little unit for viewing online video March 13, 2010 Willie (Central Illinois) Bought this unit to use with my Netflix subscription. It was very easy to hook-up and contains plenty of output "types" to support whatever equipment you have. The instructions for hooking up the unit to Netflix was straightforward as well. Picture quality is good as long as the Netflix servers can keep up with the demand. For example, there are times when the sound and picture are "separated" but I believe that is Netflix fault and not the unit.
Price could be a little lower but most would say that about anything. Great way to view online videos on your TV instead of the computer though so it's worth the money. :)

- Very compact sie
- Extremely simple to install

You don't have to be a geek at all to use this little but rich functional box.
