3 out of 5 stars It's a good remote   November 2, 2008

It has arrow buttons that allow you to scan though the custom button pages either direction. The battery lasts a long time between charges; I sometimes don't put it on the charging base but once every couple weeks. It works well and is easy to use and setup. My biggest complaints are: it's hard to get the remote set on the charging base just right, so that the contacts touch and it charges. I have to play with it for several minutes some times. It only has 6 custom buttons per page, where as my newer 880 has 8 and the spaces between them are greater so easier to see. For the same money, I'd go for the referb 880, but for a new remote, this is a good remote and worth the money.

1 out of 5 stars Dont waste your time   October 28, 2008

OK let me just all the things that are wrong with this remote.

1. It does not even give you individual control over the power of your devices. It works at a 10000 foot level and wants you to create activities where it controls the inputs and various other aspects of the devices. Well It just did not work for me and did not give me control to do it myself.

2. Bottom Line I just wanted a universal remote not a mini computer that wants to set up all my componets with a single button. This control will not give you the control you want.

3. You must store you settings online. This is crap. IF they ever wanted to start charging you for the service you would have to pay or junk the remote.

4. The software did not give me much control other than the 10,000 foot level.

5. Remote is slow and lags. IE I hit Picture size on for my TV and nothing happens. I hit it again nothing. I hit it again then it cycles through three times to catch up with the button hits.

The remote is going back to the store.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent remote (but non-gadget minded buyers beware)   July 11, 2008
Sticks
This is an excellent remote and with some practice (and patience) you can have it handling everything that it might have taken 2 or more remotes to do and many things that no ordinary all-in-one could dream of doing. Caution: the setup of this remote is definitely not suitable for those folks who are not computer or gadget savvy. If you fall into that camp I recommend finding a friend or family member who can do the setup for you as the software can be overwhelming to the non-geeks. If you have difficulty programming a VCR you will be frustrated by this remote. That being said, once it is set up it is a life saver and can be used through out the house - not just confined to one set of entertainment devices.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone should have a true univeral remote...   May 15, 2008

As the title says, everyone should have a *true* univeral remote, but not necessarily the 720.

While I only have experience with the 550 and the 720, it is my understanding that all of the Logitech Harmony remotes are virtually identical, with bells and whistles (and layout/shape) of the remote being the key differences (and therefore affecting price).

The 720 has a nice color screen and allows for 6 customizable buttons, and comes with a charger, as opposed to the 550 (4 customizable buttons, monochrome screen, a bit harder to read, and uses AAA batteries). Note however that the list price for the 720 is roughl 2x that of the 550. If I had to pay $150, or especially $200 for a 720, I would say it's likely not worth it -- consider going with a lower-cost option.

My setup consists of a cable box, TV, HD-DVD player, standard DVD player, home theater receiver, and a PS3. (Note that you can use any harmony remote with the PS3 by purchasing an optional adaptor made by Nykko, as the PS3 actually uses blue-tooth, not iR or radio waves.)

I've set the control up such that with the press of one button, it will (a) turn on my TV, (b) turn on my HD-DVD player, (c) turn on my HT receiver, (d) set the receiver to the correct input for the HD-DVD player, (e) set the TV to the correct input for the HD-DVD player, and finally (f) mute the TV's internal speaker. Moreover, with one single remote (and without having to select any options) I can pause the HD-DVD, or adjust the volume on the stereo.

I've also programmed it to control an iR air-purifier (more just to see that it could do it than anything else).

Note that the 890 (and a few other select harmony remotes) support RF signals (so you don't run into the line-of-sight issues faced with iR), and something called Z-Wave (used for some ceiling fans). Of course, you pay a LOT more for the remotes that support these (again, bells and whistles -- depending on what you need, it may/may not be needed).

But even if you have just a simple setup, I'd still highly recommend this remote.

Finally, Logitech customer service is fantastic. My remote had a functional problem -- called them up and they sent out a replacement remote asap.
