2 out of 5 stars Great card, for about 2 months.   June 8, 2008

It was a great card, after two months it just stopped working. In fact, it worked in the afternoon, then at night it kept crashing my ds. I'd get the menu sometimes, then nothing. I reformatted the microsd card, that didn't help, the card is dead. I messed with it all day today. But, I'm guessing that I just got a bad card. It work really well before that. I won't buy another, because there are so many to choose from. I had an R4 before and it was super until the spring loaded microsd slot wore out. meh. time to go look for a new card. maybe the Supercard.

5 out of 5 stars Homebrew Device plus some   March 8, 2008

The R4 is probably one of the many homebrew devices out there that offer a wide range of compatibility with the homebrew community. As I myself have one, and others, and can't stop playing around with it just to see what its limitations are. This and the others like it, (I.E. EDGE, CycloneDS, TopToy, Games 'N Music) are what helps keep the DS still interesting, pushing the DS to its limits and still trying to go farther. But anyways let me get to a real reveiw insted of personal opinion.

First thing you need in order for the R4 To work is a Transflash, (A.K.A. Micro SD card) so dont forget to pick one up, (A 1 Gig is plenty.) Once you have one, put the disk that comes with the R4 into your computer and put the firmware from the disk into the SD card. Load any homebrews you may have downloaded from the net into the card as well, and WALLA, you now can start to see the R4 in action. The first thing you'll see is the Load screen, this happens for not even two seconds, and then you are promted with three options. Games, Media, and Boot to Slot 2. Choosing games is what most people will be looking to go to. You will then presented with a list of homebrews games and applications (these are the ones that you have put onto the SD card.) scroll through and pick what you want to load up, and prepair to play. Picking Media will load up Moonshell. Moonshell has a simmiler look to the games option, but this time you are greeted with a much more relaxing and cooler layout. Here is where you can play your MP3's, Wave's, and a few more music formats as well as video. The main supported video format is DPG, You can find a few programs that will convert your video files (DVD FAB is a GREAT program for to do this.) While not as clean looking as most video formats, its still impressive for a DS. If you ever wanted to exit moonshell without having to shut your DS down, all you simply need to do is press start and then be taken back to the main screen of the R4. The third option is boot to slot two which boots to the lower slot on the bottom of the DS.

The pros

Plays Homebrews (Commercial and Non-commercial)
Comes with Moonshell (the most common DS broswer)
Website that keeps the firmware up to date, along with other Applications.
Has Auto DLDI patching
Comes with a Micro SD USB cardreader
Comes with a game case and strap that will hold two DS sized games

Cons

Need to buy a Micro SD card seperate
As of this writing only supports up to 4 Gig Micro SD cards
Most places you will find want $40 plus for it (look around, they are cheaper)
