4 out of 5 stars Seems Revolutionary   November 20, 2008

Yet so simple. Workouts without wires! Simply amazing. The white ipod-style earbud has a tendency to pop out of one ear. I'm going to try the black in-ear style.

I use my Ipod shuffle running, biking, walking and skiing and... spend an awful time untangling the earpiece wires from pockets, sunglasses, etc.
I tried the Monster shuffle earphones; they are completely useless if you are moving; won't even stay in place if you walk slowly. I returned them to Apple store the next day and took the time to explain deficiency to store personnel.
So I was delighted to read about Arriva in NY Times and ordered it.
The Arriva is comfortable, stays in place with all activity, sound is ok for my ears.

Good and bad news: the first one delivered had faulty sound..unacceptable sound, and I thought Oh No, here comes a big hassle. But one e-mail, responded to in same day, acknowledged deficiency, replacement arrived 2 days later (just today) and seems fine.
Easy to adjust functions with the shuffle on back of neck and quickly you don't even know its there. No bluetooth, no extra batteries, no added complexity, just great creative design.

5 out of 5 stars odd but useful   August 30, 2008

I ordered these with the ipod style earbuds because I can't stand in-your-ear earbuds. But at first, they sent me the in-your-ear style due to a computer problem. When I contacted them they quickly sent me the right kind, with a postage paid return envelope, telling me to try them both, keep the one I want, & send the other back. So I had a chance to try both.

So...on the earbuds, it just depends on what you like. I tried them both, & went with the ipod style. Aside from personal preference, there's nothing to choose between the two types, except the the in-the-ear type is anchored to your ear canal, which holds the earbuds in place a little better, and perhaps a little of the streetnoise is muffled with the in-the-ears. But I just find this kind uncomfortable.

The device works as advertised. The thing kind of hangs on to your head using the wires around your ears. The wires are not easy to adjust precisely, but it doesn't really matter since an approximate adjustment works just fine. The shuffle itself seems to be upside down when you look at it after it's inserted into the device, but once you get it on your head, the controls are intuitively placed & easy to adjust.

The thing is practically weightless, and is not likely to come off, even if you are running. The shuffle is securely connected and will not fall off once properly inserted. And the device will not work unless it's properly inserted.

It seems to me to be more practical than the full earmuff type of headphones. The sound is perfectly acceptable for the price range. Obviously, they are not as good as, say, the Bang & Olafsen earbuds, but they are fine for listening to audiobooks, podcasts, & popular music. Actually, classical is okay, too, as long as you are not one of the picky sort of listener. In which case, you shouldn't be using earbuds, anyway.

Both versions appear to be well constructed, and likely to outlive your shuffle. They come with little padded bags, about 2 1/2 inches square, which will hold the earbuds & the shuffle. This is useful if you throw the things into your purse or bag.
