Product Description
Bring your audio and video to life with an excellent HDMI DVD player for your TV. When you use an HDMI port for connectivity with your 1080p capable TV. this Philips DV5982 DVD Player will upconvert an ordinary DVD to appear as if it were native to 1080p. This extremely compact player plays a wide variety of DVD discs as well as DiVX discs. It can also double as a CD player and will even play CD-R discs that have encoded MP3 files. So when you add this component to your home-theater system, it delivers outstanding, versatile audio and video performance. Then there's more! Somewhat unique to DVD players is the inclusion of a USB port at the front of the unit. If you use a USB-equipped media card reader or a USB Flash pocket drive, you can export images from your digital camera or card-based camcorder directly to your player for throughput to your TV. Widescreen ready, this player is an ideal companion for your new widescreen HDTV in your home. 4 out of 5 stars Unit works great; Wish it had more audio features   July 7, 2008
The DVD player works as it should, and the picture looks great. No complaints there. It would earn 5 stars except for the lack of ability to generate 5.1 sound with a direct connection to my sound system. I don't know if I can get it out of the TV set with a HDMI connection.

4 out of 5 stars Muy Buen Equipo   July 7, 2008
Muy Buen Equipo, me permite ver todos los formatos que bajo de internet ademas de los DVD convencionales. Lo recomiendo.

La unica contra es que un poco lento para algunas funciones.

5 out of 5 stars Inshallah, you get what you pay for - on a good day!   July 7, 2008
This Philips DVD player was bought to replace an earlier version purchased almost 3 years ago. That model finally went psycho, doing many weird things during playback, such as suddenly deciding there was "no disc", etc. Perhaps a diet of daily power interruptions, rather dusty environs, and occassional extremes of arid heat and chilly dampness accelerated its demise.
This newer model is not coded for, nor have I a code to make it, "all regions" unlike the programming I found for the old one. Still if only NTSC & PAL discs are in your collection, it does the job just fine. The white remote is a color choice that will show dirt very soon, but the DVD unit itself is great, is thin so it fits in tight cabinets on top of the TV, looks good, and was delivered VERY quickly at a 'great value' price. Not over-loaded with 'lookit my new toy' bells and whistles that nearly no one uses, but still not as intuitive as the older model. No matter, having had the first one, had no hesitation to buy this as a replacement, and will likely go back for a similar model when this one finally dies.

I could not test the up-converting feature as my multi-zone/multi-voltage tv is not HDTV capable, so I have no such discs in my collection at this time. All said and done? BUY IT!!! The Amazon price is again excellent, as was the service. - JS

4 out of 5 stars Take that, blu-ray.   July 7, 2008
Excellent picture quality from 480p to 1080p. I can't say I see a noticeable difference beyond 720p, but that is most likely due to the limitations of a standard definition DVD. The newer a movie/dvd is, the better it seems to look on it. For example, The Matrix didn't look quite as impressive visually as when I tried putting in the Transformers movie, which looked outstanding. This will definitely tide you over on any new HDTV until blu-ray comes down in price. ($30+ a movie? No thanks!)

The menu system as others have said, is archaic. It's hard to navigate and hard to understand at points, but it works. Don't bother spending too much money on an HDMI cable if you weren't sure. I use the 6ft HDMI cable that came as a special purchase with this player for only a penny more and it worked great. Not to mention this model is cheaper than most I've seen in stores. Philips is the best for up-conversion players in my experience working in a home entertainment store. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars New lease on life for your old DVD collection   July 5, 2008
Great player, shows all my DVD's regardless of the source. This is my second Phillips DVD player, this player upconverts, the picture is great. I bought this DVD player to use with my new 1080p LCD TV. My experience with Philips led me to buy this DVD upconverter. I have had other DVD players that play some disks but not others. The only flaw is the remote, but, I'll live with it...
