Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The DWL-G730AP is a portable and convenient wireless solution for the traveling business person delivering 802.11g wireless connectivity with a maximum wireless signal rate of up to 54Mbps*. Use it in conference rooms, hotel rooms, or even at hotspots. The Wireless Pocket Router/AP might be small in size, but is huge in functionality. The DWL-G730AP supports multiple operation modes including: Access Point (AP) mode to create a wireless connection; Router mode to share an Internet connection; and Wireless Client mode to connect an existing wireless network. Easily switch between these modes by using the 3-way configuration switch located at the bottom. In AP mode, the DWL-G730AP can be used to create a wireless network in a room where a single Ethernet port is provided. Now multiple wireless clients can connect to the network at the same time to share resources and files. The Pocket Router/AP supports WPA-PSK to secure your wireless data communications. In AP mode, the DWL-G730AP adds support for 802.1x user authentication with an external RADIUS server. For setup and configuration the DWL-G730AP can be accessed via D-Link's user-friendly Web-based utility.

2 out of 5 stars Could not configure properly, does not pass AppleTalk   October 6, 2008
Joseph M Galloy
I could not get this device to work properly in client mode, despite many years experience setting up wired and wireless networks. (My router is a D-Link Gamefuel wireless G.) It would frequently lose its settings for no apparent reason, and I'd be forced to reset the device to factory settings and start all over again. Also, it does not appear to support AppleTalk over wireless. This is the first purchase that I've returned to Amazon in 10 years.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful tool for on the road   September 14, 2008

I got this before a business trip recently. It is just what it is advertised to be: compact and functional.

The only negative I have about this device is that even though it can be powered over USB, the power connector on the device is not a standard USB connector, so you have to carry the included USB cable along. (not a big deal with the included zippered case)

The first time I tried to set it up, the wizard didn't save my configuration changes. I just ended up setting it up manually, so I never figured out if the wizard actually works or not.

The device supports WPA2-PSK, which is a good feature.

Range is a lot better than I would have thought. A colleague three hotel suites down (same floor though) than me was able to reliable use my connection.

3 out of 5 stars client mode not well thought out; won't connect to "54g only" network   August 24, 2008

This is a useful device which I purchased mainly for its "client mode" and as a backup wireless router. Especially appreciated is the ability to run on USB power. However, I spent about six hours trying to get client mode to work on my wireless network. After much trial and error with various configurations, I found that this device doesn't like the "54g only" setting of my ASUS wireless router. It does eventually connect with 54g, so no idea why this setting poses a problem.

I have to say that the client mode is not well thought out. The web interface gives you none of the information necessary to diagnose wireless client problems. No info on whether the device successfully connected to the wireless network you configured, no connection strength, no bit rate-- nothing. So it's not a surprise that customers who have a problem with client mode quickly give up and return this device.

Another hint about client mode: although the configuration gives you the impression that you must manually choose a wireless channel, the device will indeed scan all channels regardless of your setting. This is just another thing to confuse users.

4 out of 5 stars Using in "client" mode, works well.   August 19, 2008

I've had this unit for about 3 weeks and have used it in multiple locations as a client to connect to wireless networks on a hard-wired NIC. Just set the mode switch, run the wizard, enter the appropriate information and you're connected. The wizard will list all available wireless networks it detects and allow you to chose the one you want.

I have not tested the Access Point or router functions but the client mode works very well.

It is a wonderful product, very compact, powerful and convenient. Please be not fooled by its size, it has all the function you need. I bought one for myself when I was traveling. Very unfortunately, my advisor saw it when I took it to office, and he love it very much and bought it from me:)
