Amazon.com Product Description
Garmin continues to build up its nuevi 7xx series portable GPS navigators with its nuevi 755T, which adds a number of handy routing and communication features to an already impressive list of specs, including a 4.3-inch widescreen display, text-to-speech capabilities, media player, and FM transmitter for transmitting audio--including directions and MP3 music and audiobooks--from the device to your car radio.

Garmin's nuevis pack top of the line features into a slim form factor..
New to the nuevi 7x5 lineup is Garmin's HotFix satellite prediction (which locates your position quickly and precisely), Lane Assist (which provides lane guidance and junction views when possible), automatic time zone transitioning, and 3D Building views as well as Garmin Connect Photos to help you visually ascertain your position. Additionally, the nuevi 755T includes free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) via the included GTM 20 traffic receiver.

The Garmin nuevi 7x5 Series
  • nuevi 755T: North American maps, GTM 20 traffic receiver with lifetime traffic
  • nuevi 765T: Adds Bluetooth handsfree communication; includes GTM 20 receiver, lifetime traffic
  • nuevi 775T: Pre-loaded European and North American maps; includes GTM 20 receiver, lifetime traffic, Bluetooth
  • nuevi 785T: Adds enhanced MSN Direct traffic receiver; includes North American maps and Bluetooth
As with all nuevis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of an integrated high-sensitivity receiver, a slim, pocket-sized design with a gorgeous display, an easy, intuitive interface, and detailed NAVTEQ maps for North America (United States, Canada and Puerto Rico) with more than 6 million name-searchable points of interest. The Garmin nuevi 7x5 line features three other models--check out their spec highlights at the right and click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nuevi GPS navigators.

The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

The nuevi 755T comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin's patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location.

With Lane Guidance, the nuevi alerts you to which lane you need to be in for upcoming turns. In the image above, the three middle lanes of this seven-lane highway are highlighted.

With Junction View, you'll get photo-realistic 3D views upcoming turns with signage--signs not needed for navigation are faded.
Lane Guidance
With the new Lane Guidance feature built into the nuevi 7x5 series, you'll never question which lane you should be driving in again. It provides you with a view of what lane you should be in for upcoming turns. And with the 3D Lane Assist Junction View, you'll be able to see a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. The signs that aren't needed for navigation are faded compared to the appropriate lane signage.

Integrated Traffic Receiver
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information--the traffic updates are free for the life of the device.

All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nuevi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous--there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

HotFix Satellite Prediciton
Garmin's HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nuevi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about). A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Where Am I? Where's My Car?
The nuevi 7x5 series is the first to answer two common questions: "Where am I?" and "Where's my car?" At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nuevi 7x5s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount.

Navigate by Photo with Garmin Connect Photos

Using Garmin's Connect Photos Web site, you can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google's Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nuevi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

  • The 3D Buildings feature is able to reference the buildings displayed on the map as well. Some buildings will be grey images "extruded" from the map, other buildings will be life like representations of the actual property.
  • With Automatic Time Zone Transition, you'll never have to remember to set the time as you travel. When the unit acquires a position fix, it automatically sets the unit to the correct time zone.

3 out of 5 stars lane assist & Junction view add'l coverage not free   November 15, 2008
Tim (Atlanta, GA)
0 out of 3 found this review helpful

I just got off the phone with Garmin and was told:
1. that Lane guidance and Junction View are both part of Lane Guidance
2. That additional coverage will come incremetnally with map updates and map updates (as opposed to hardware updates) are not free.
So right now its a gamble whether your area is currently covered and you are home free, or you will have to keep buying map updates to get the additional Lane/Junction coverage. I've just ordered the 755 & will be going on a trip shortly after it arrives - if the coverage isn't there, then I will probably be returning it & keep on chugging on my Nuvi 660 until the coverage matures. I stopped buying updates for the 66o two years ago. I gave it 3 stars based on my experience with other garmin products. I'll update this after I get and use the unit. I decided to review it now as some of the other reviews seemed to imply that updates for add'l coverage would be free

3 out of 5 stars The 755t more show than show   November 9, 2008

I have had my 755t for a week. This is my third gamin. When this unit works properly it looks and operates great. I bought it mainly for the lifetime traffic alert and no pop up antenna.

I live in the Washington D.C. area. I have had lane assist operate just 2 times. If you are headed out of d.c to Maryland on 295 south and you exit on 210 there it is lane assist. That's it it has never worked any were else. The 3d view works in all of downtown d.c looks cool but no real value. Traffic alert only works on major roads so doing rush hour don't expect the unit to fined those unpopulated 2 lane back roads. No 3d view below the mason Dixon line. No traffic alerts below the mason Dixon line. As a matter of fact the unit for some reason refused to work in Norfolk VA? The unit went black every time i tried to pull up The map. It started working again in Petersberg VA. There are firmware issues with my unit. I have upgraded on line but the unit still says it has the old firmware on it. One last thing when crossing the Wilson Bridge from VA to Maryland (the bridge is not quite complete yet) the unit says recalculating 3 times than commits some kind of electronic suicide and shuts itself down. It than recalculates and i see the lane assist work for the second time when I exit 210 in Maryland. This unit is not worth the price wait 6 months if you can. The price will dip $100 and hopefully there will be more lane assist and the firmware issues would have been worked out. Frank

2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed   October 30, 2008
P. Slabowski (Jersey)

A little background: My wife bought me a GPS for our anniversary in August. So yes, I'm a newbie at this stuff. She got me a Tomtom ONE, which is, for the money, not a bad little unit. But it had a few issues, so I thought I'd upgrade. For almost twice the amount she had paid, I bought a nuvi 255. This device was a disaster, inaccurate, nowhere near the amount of information on screen, no configurability ... well, yeah, I can change the voice, or the car icon - whoopie!

That one went back, and I pre-ordered a 755t before they were actually available. I was impressed with the ads that show the ALG and Junction Views. I anxiously waited, and then one day, it arrived. The rubberized coating and feel of the unit was remarkable! The screen nice and bright. I couldn't wait to see the ALG and Junction Views, so I opted to drive 30+ miles to work the next day (instead of taking the train) and see the features in action.

So off I went up toward I-95N to Jersey City. The first thing I found was that it was really delayed in providing turn instructions. It's a good thing I already knew how to get to work, because I would have definitely missed many of my turns. Uh oh. My second impression was that it was nowhere near as loud as my Tomtom. So when traffic stopped on Rt18, I tried turning it up ... but there was only one notch to go, and it wasn't much louder. So I turned off the radio and closed the windows.

Next, I was surprised that the unit didn't seem to know that the turnpike has different sets of lanes for "Cars Only" and for "Cars & Trucks". It kept insisting that I "keep right" which would've put me in the mix with Cars & Trucks. I have found this happens every time I get on or off the turnpike. I guess someday a map update might correct it.

For some reason, between two exits on the NJ Turnpike (and this happened coming home at night, too), it needed to "recalculate". It couldn't have been due to traffic, since there wasn't any, and the TMC didn't indicate any, either. Maybe it's because I used that "Cars Only" on-ramp instead of trying to fight with the trucks. Weird.

The Speed Limits were right on target. This much I can say. I also found that the unit is extremely fast at recalculating a route. That is a good trade-off for those times it doesn't give enough notice about your exits, I guess.

And what of those two new features that convinced me to spend $[...] on a GPS unit? ALG came up ONCE in all the times I've used the device in Central and Northern NJ. Junction View? Can anyone tell me if this device actually HAS it? I have never seen it. So I have a device that is not quite as good at navigating as the $[...] Tomtom, but it lets me play MP3's and let's me view pictures, has a currency converter (that doesn't update automatically like the one on my cellphone/pda), and a calculator (I guess in case the one on my pda breaks). I can't change colors, or very much of anything else. And I can hardly hear it if I have the AC on.

I've gotten an RMA for this unit, and I've begun to play with a Navigon 7200t. So far ... REALLY liking the Navigon. It has some issues, too, but ALG and Junction View and 3D View all work in my area. It also comes with lifetime traffic, and to top it all off, it gives GREAT DIRECTIONS, in time for me to navigate. One Hundred US Dollars less than the MSRP Price I paid for the 755t, [...]!

Oh well, I gave up the MP3 player. I'll need to use my radio and in-dash CD player, I guess. And I suppose I'll need to view pictures on my 24" LCD PC Monitor when I get home. Geez, and I wanted to look at them while I was driving.

Curious, has anyone else had these feelings about this device? Or maybe mine has some problems? Has ANYONE from NJ seen ALG or Junction View? I can't believe Garmin would omit such a highly-populated area that has such complex roadways.

Not impressed,
-pvs

5 out of 5 stars It Works Just The Way It's Suppose To   October 23, 2008

I only have this unit for 10 days, and so far, it's working the way it is supposed to. I have not encountered any glitch at this point, and I can't comment on the TMC as there is no coverage for this feature where I live. But Dan Nichols posted a pretty extensive review on October 9, '08, and I must say that I totally agree with his comments. The only difference is, that Dan prefered Australlian Karen while I prefered British Daniel, with a little more authoritative voice over Karen. The one feature that I like most on this unit over the 265WT, which was my first choice, is the LANE ASSIST. You won't appreciate it until you find yourself in a situation where you're in very unfamiliar places with a very busy traffic. So far I'm very happy with it and it deserves five stars.

BTW: I heard lots of Bluetooth problem with bluetooth enabled 7x5 series... This model (755) should be less problem since it doesnot have a bluetooth. My unit may arrived in couple of weeks...

Updates:
My 755T arrived several days ago. Quite impressive, but not quite satisfied with it's 'touchscreen'. It feels slugish. It also having issues with 3rd party maps. BUT... Yesterday, I upgraded it's firmware to v2.50. Most of the issues were resolved, and the 'touchscreen' is getting better. The refresh speed is quite amazing.
